Via Francigena - EN

The Via Francigena, which led from Canterbury to Rome, is one of the most ancient medieval routes. It is a main road travelled in the past by thousands of pilgrims on their way to Rome. It played a fundamental role in the construction of the European identity by bringing together religions, cultures, customs, languages and local economies, thus contributing to the integration of the peoples of the old continent.

The territory of Castelfiorentino is crossed by the Via Francigena in the hillside hamlet of Castelnuovo d'Elsa, precisely in the locality of Coiano, where there is one of the 79 stops on the official itinerary of the Via Francigena, the one described by Sigeric in 990 AD: the Pieve dei Santi Pietro e Paolo di Coiano.

Behind the Pieve, there is also an equipped rest area for those who need to rest along the way.
