Why Castelfiorentino "in the heart of Tuscany"?

Founded on a settlement of Roman origin which had developed along the ancient Via Francigena, Castelfiorentino represents a natural crossroads between the most important art cities of Tuscany: Florence, Pisa and Siena. Its name, whose origins can be traced back to the XII century ("Castrum Florentinum"), underlines a strong bond with the city of Florence, further confi rmed by its emblem: a red lily on a white background. It is no coincidence that it was actually in Castelfiorentino that the peace treaty was signed between Florence and Siena in 1260, following the bloody Battle of Montaperti between the Guelfs and Ghibellines (recalled by Dante Alighieri in "The Divine Comedy"), which is illustrated on the ancient curtain of the Teatro del Popolo, one of Tuscany's most important historical theatres.
Castelfiorentino still shows evident traces of a glorious past, largely deriving from its strategic position. The bond with Florentine Renaissance culture is to be seen in the frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, which can be admired in the new Be.Go. Museum, and in the works exhibited in the Sacred Art Museum of Santa Verdiana. The surrounding hills are characterized by some enchanting landscapes embellished by the presence of monumental Villas and Castles of great historical and architectural value. In the surrounding countryside, it is still possible to appreciate the "most original courtesy" of the country folk, remarked on by Stendhal and reinterpreted in a contemporary key by those who run today's holiday farms.
